MACK Cinema Club is a new screening series showcasing film and moving image work made, or curated, by MACK artists. Accompanying MACK’s list of cinema books, these regular screenings will provide a forum to explore the intersection between cinema, writing, and publishing. Each screening will present a unique programme alongside an additional element, including post-screening discussions, special introductions and new opportunities for film criticism.
Taking place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, the first three MACK Cinema Club screenings present a varied programme across B-movie cinema, avant-garde film, and documentary. To celebrate the release of Water Over Thunder: Selected Writings by Larry Sultan, MACK Cinema Club is hosting a screening of Take the 5:10 to Dreamland (1974) by Bruce Conner and Safe (1995) by Todd Haynes, cited by Sultan as two of his favourite films. On 27 May, writers Amelia Abraham and Asa Seresin will reappraise William Friedkin’s 1980 film Cruising to mark the publication of Sex, Clubs, Dissent: Visualising Queer Nightlife, edited by Abraham. For the third screening on 15 July, photographer Liz Johnson Artur will curate a special selection of short films that influenced her recent book I Will Keep You in Good Company.
